Statement by Ambassador Dr. Stephen Ndung'u Karau
Excellency, I would like to convey my gratitude to you for taking the time to receive my credentials.
I wish to convey warm greetings from His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta and the people of Kenya.
It is a great honour to represent my country at the United Nations in Geneva. The importance of Geneva as the center of multilateral diplomacy has grown over the years and is now critical in many spheres of socio-economic development; trade, health, labour, environment, communication and human rights, to mention but a few.
Kenya is proud of its association and partnership with the United Nations and particularly values the collaboration in enhancing peace and security around the world. Indeed, Kenya has contributed troops to a number of United Nations peacekeeping missions and peace building activities in countries in conflict. We are currently engaged in peace building in Somalia including the voluntary resettlement of refugees through the Tripartite Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kenya, the Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Kenya has faced a number of challenges wrought by extremist groups and the increasing incidents of terrorism that have taken place on our soil and around the world. In that regard, we have continued to collaborate with the United Nations, partners in the continent and others further afield to build capacity to counter violent extremism, combat terrorists and foreign fighters and effectively prosecute sponsors, supporters and perpetrators of terrorist acts.
Your Excellency, the past year saw disease outbreaks such as the Ebola pandemic in West Africa which resulted in great loss of life. Kenya is therefore augmenting international efforts to combat the disease and last month, dispatched 170 health workers to join other health experts in the affected countries to help contain the scourge.
Excellency, I look forward to working closely with you in addressing some of these challenges and in pursuit of our common objectives. I thank you.
